About the Republic of the Sudan

The environment of the Sudan has been devastated by desertification and years of war. The civil war has generated roughly 6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the whole of the Sudan. Soldiers, rebels, and militia have burned thousands of villages, raped villagers, and destroyed their crops and livestock.
  • About ¼ the size of the United States
  • At war all but 11 yrs since its independence in 1956
  • Per capita income <$1000 per year
  • Three out of five adults cannot read
  • A child born today will on average only live until the age of 55
  • Only 35% of children attend school
  • One in four Sudanese do not have access to potable water
  • The North-South Civil War claimed more than 2 million lives
  • January 2005 – Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the North and South

Darfur

  • The crisis in Darfur has displaced almost 2 million people and more than 2000 villages have been burned
  • The environment in Darfur has been increasingly decimated, undergone desertification, and cannot support the current population
  • The process of rebuilding Darfur will rely heavily on the international community
  • May 2006 – Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) between SLA rebels and the Government of National Unity
